Supplement Reviews and Ratings

While it may seem daunting to try and research all the available nutritional supplements (also known as vitamins) on the market, you can breathe easy.  The hard work has already been done for you, and listed in the “Nutri-Search Comparative Guide To Nutritional Supplements.”  More than 1,500 supplement reviews and ratings were performed, and only 4 were given the Nutri-Search Gold Medal for excellence.

Every Christian woman concerned with good health should be taking one of these four supplements:

  • Creating Wellness Alliance
    • available through chiropractic offices
    • approx. $64/month
  • Douglas Laboratories
    • available through doctors’ offices
    • approx. $57/month
  • Truestar Health
    • available at fitness centers
    • approx. $47/month
  • Usana Health Sciences
    • available online (order the “Essentials”)
    • approx. $40/month

If you are currently taking something else, I recommend checking out your supplement reviews and ratings in the “Comparative Guide.”  If your supplement gets a substandard rating, it may be time to switch to one of the Gold Medal winners.

If you have read the Christian weight loss guide, “Learn, Lose, Live: A 3-Phase Plan For Transforming Your Eating Habits,” you know that not supplementing your diet properly can hold you back from losing all the weight you need to.

If you haven’t read the guide yet, I encourage you to download it here today.

What To Look For In A Nutritional Supplement

All supplements are not created equal.  As mentioned in yesterday’s post, you could be wasting your money on supplements that don’t perform.  But even worse yet, the supplements you are putting in to your body could even be dangerous.  In an unregulated industry, you need to look for a manufacturer that imposes its own strict standards on the supplements they put on the market.

The manufacturer of any supplement you choose should:

  1. Adhere to U.S. and Canada Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP)
    • These are the standards that pharmaceutical manfacturers are required to adhere to.  If your supplement manufacturer adheres to these same standards, you know you are receiving a high-quality product.
  2. Follow U.S. Pharmacopeia Guidelines
    • Following these guidelines means that your supplements are guaranteed to actually dissolve in your stomach!
  3. Include Nutrients at Optimal Levels
    • Following U.S. Recommended Daily Allowance (USRDA) for nutrients (as most leading brands do) will not provide the nutrients you need to prevent degenerative disease.  This is because the USRDA is an outdated standard that was created to prevent acute deficiency diseases such as scurvy and rickettes!  A truly beneficial supplement will include nutrients at levels optimal for noticeably improving your health.
  4. Provide Nutrients In Correct Ratios
    • All nutrients work together, so if they are not provided in the correct ratios, you may literally be flushing away potential benefits.

Fortunately, you don’t have to do all the research yourself, because it has been done for you.  A company called NutriSearch has studied over 1,500 nutritional supplements and rated them.  Out of all these, only 4 won NutriSearch’s Gold Medal.

The book is available through Amazon.com:

You can order a copy of the book yourself, or just come back tomorrow! In tomorrow’s post I will share with you the to four Gold Medal winners, and share with you the pros and cons of each, and how you can get them for yourself.

Are You Destroying Your Health?

We all know that being overweight is not good for our health.  But have you considered that the same eating habits that got you overweight could be causing other serious health problems?  Degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, stroke, Alzheimer’s, arthritis, and diabetes have reached what seem to be epidemic proportions in recent years.  The unhealthy eating habits we have developed as a result of our busy, need-it-now society, may be the cause.

Do you realize that almost no one gets the optimal levels of vitamins and minerals in their diet each day?  Think about it for a moment.  When was the last time you got your 5 servings a day of fruits and vegetables?  If you did get them, did you make sure and get a good variety of different colored produce?  Did you eat them raw so that you don’t lose the nutrients through cooking?

Most of us just don’t have the time or resources to do this every single day, and our health suffers for it.  If you have already thought about this fact, you may have turned to nutritional supplements (also known as vitamins) as a solution.

Though they can never replace fruits and vegetables, nutritional supplements are the perfect complement to a healthy diet.  But are you sure you are getting what you are paying for?  Since the nutritional supplement industry is unregulated, you might not be getting what you pay for.  When studied, many common brands have found not to include the nutrients as labeled on the bottle.  Some of them include trace amounts of additional substances that are not included on the label.  (Including such vile and unsanitary things as rat feces!)

Even if the supplement does include the ingredients on the label, how do you know whether they are bioavailable?  In other words, are the nutrients provided in a form that your body can actually break down and use?

And are you sure that the pills will even dissolve in your stomach?  It is sad, but true; many “one-a-day” type vitamin pills are compressed so tightly when manufactured that they will not even break down in your stomach.

Fortunately, there are some excellent, high-quality supplements available on the market today.  Tomorrow’s post will provide you with the 4 criteria you should look for in a supplement, and some recommendations for you to look into.

In the meantime, why don’t you do a little test with your supplements at home?  Put one in a glass of water, and come back in 15 minutes to see what has happened.  Did it dissolve?  I did a test like this once with a grocery store brand of Vitamin C.  After two weeks, not only was the pill still intact, it was actually stuck to the bottom of the glass!

Can You Lose Weight Through Prayer?

As Christians we understand that God is sovereign, and that He is in control of our lives.  So when we find ourselves with a situation that seems out of control, we often turn to Him in prayer to help us.  This is an appropriate response, and we should always pray for help in our lives.

Unfortunately, in the area of weight loss, this becomes a problem for some women.  Praying for help is the first step in the process, but it can not be used as a “magic pill” to get your weight problem under control.  You need to actually do the work to lose weight!  If you are like many overweight women, you may have tried many shortcuts to lose weight.  If so, you have probably learned that there are no shortcuts!  This process, which many people call “yo-yo dieting,” can actually complicate the issue by confusing you as to what works and what doesn’t.  It can even convince that it is not possible to lose weight, or that you are destined to be fat forever.

The first important step to take is to admit that there is no easy shortcut to overcoming your weight problem.  Praying every day or “claiming” scriptures will not magically drop the weight.  Instead:

  1. Pray to God that you will find the correct and true information that will help you eliminate the sin of gluttony for your life, and to regain your health.
  2. Ask Him to give you the courage to implement the information you find.
  3. Pray that He will give you the strength and conviction to continue your healthy lifestyle every day.
  4. Finally, you will need to pray for forgiveness when you have a sinful attitude (such as resentment) about the changes you need to make in your life.

All that being said, pay close attention to the first thing you should pray for.  God will provide you with the information you need to truly eliminate overeating and get healthy in your life.  Great advances have been made in nutrition in recent years, and you can learn everything from how to deal with cravings to how to help prevent degenerative diseases associated with being overweight, such as diabetes.

These are the things I did when I needed to lose weight, and God directed me to the information I needed.  I have kept the weight off for a couple of years now, and I feel so much happier and more energetic since I did.  That is why I wrote the ebook “Learn, Lose, Live: A 3-Phase Plan For Transforming Your Eating Habits.”  I wanted to share the information I learned with other Christian women.  If you need help, please check it out.
