As long as I'm growing
spiritually and serving the Lord... As long as
I'm taking care of my family...
As long as I'm involved in my church, then... God Doesn't Care If I'm Fat!
Dear Christian Friend,
If you are an overweight Christian woman, you
are not alone. Picture your church right now: your women's group,
choir, Sunday School class or fellowship group, wherever you
participate. Look around at the other women there; are many of
them overweight? The sad reality is that in most of our churches
today, being overweight is not the exception, but the norm. There is a reason you are fat. You may not want to hear it, because the truth is hard.
But we as Christians are committed to the truth, so I encourage you to
keep reading. The number of people who are overweight due to
medical problems is a tiny minority, which means that the rest of us
have to face reality. Is Being
Fat A Sin?
The
question is how did you get fat? Most of us have
gotten here by committing the sin of gluttony. You probably
haven't even heard this word in a long time, since pastors rarely
preach on it anymore.
So then what is a glutton? The "Illustrated Dictionary of the Bible" (published by Thomas Nelson) says a glutton is a person who is debased and excessive in her eating habits, whose life is given to excess. (In fact, the word "gluttony" can actually refer to selfish overindulgence in any earthly pleasure, including food, sec, and spending money.) Gluttony is the abuse of the glorious gifts God has given us to enjoy in life, which are to be used in thankfulness and reverence to Him, all to his glory.
"But surely I am not a glutton," you may be thinking. "I
have cut all sin out of my life. I don't drink, smoke, swear,
gamble, have sex outside of marriage... or even litter!" Please be honest with yourself right now. You did not
get to be overweight by eating healthful food in respectful portions
out of thankfulness to God. That is not how He designed our
bodies. Maybe deep in your heart you already know that you are
sinning. When you stuff yourself at restaurants and gobble down
sweets in secret, you know that you are not glorifying God. But
you work so hard and deny yourself so much, how can God take away this
one earthly pleasure? God Doesn't Want You
Did you know that the Bible compares gluttony to
drunkenness? Pull out your Bible and read Proverbs 23:20-21: "Do not be with heavy
drinkers of wine, or Did you catch that? Gluttons will come to the same end
as alcoholics. (Keeping in mind that as always, Proverbs is
giving a general principle upon which you are wise to base your life,
rather than an absolute prediction for every person.) Not only should you avoid being a glutton yourself, but the
Bible is advising you not to even associate
with gluttons! Here's another example in Proverbs 28:7: "He who keeps the law is a
discerning son, but he That sounds outrageous, doesn't it? God doesn't want us
spending time with people who have unaddressed continual sin, and with
good reason. It is too easy for us to fall into temptation, and
begin committing the same sins as our companions. Since many of us Christians are guilty of the sin of gluttony,
we silently excuse each other. That way, we don't have to face
conviction ourselves. Many times even our pastors serve as
terrible examples for us, with their large bellies and unhealthy eating
habits. Besides, we enjoy
the weekly Sunday School donut gorge and the huge afternoon meal
followed by a lazy nap. We love it so much that we encourage each
other to continue in the sin, joking about our fat bellies, how stuffed
we feel, and even teasing the few who do exercise moderation and
restraint in their eating. The terrible reality is that we are examples of evil to one
another, rather than good. If gluttony were truly considered a
sin as shameful as alcoholism (as the Bible views it), we would all
have to repent immediately. Are You Ruining Your
If you still don't see what's so wrong with overeating, consider the effects it has not only on your body, but on your Christian witness to the world. Being overweight:
These are hard truths. But only when you face them can
you ask God to help you eliminate this sin from your life. In the Old Testament, when a child was rebellious and
completely unrepentant, his parents were required to take him out to
the city gates so that he could be stoned to death. Read
Deuteronomy 21:18-21 and notice what sins he was guilty of: "If any man has a stubborn and
rebellious son who As you can see, God regards gluttony as a serious offense
which is linked with stubbornness, rebellion, disobedience, and
drunkenness. Fortunately for us, we are no longer under the old
covenant, so we don't have to suffer stoning for our sins!
However, we still have a responsiblity to ruthlessly cut all sin out of
our lives. Food
Can Be Addictive
One
reason God hates sin is because it becomes our
master. Little by little it grabs hold of our lives, until we are
powerless to resist it anymore. In I Corinthians 6:12, Paul says:
"All things are lawful for me,
but not all things are Here's a test for you. Think about your favorite food,
your "guilty pleasure," the one you know is bad for you but you eat it
anyway. Now think about giving it up forever, never having it
again? How do you feel? If that is enough to make you break
out into a cold sweat and want to stop reading this letter right now,
you have probably allowed food to become your master. As you now know, the Bible groups gluttony with
drunkenness. Proverbs 23:29-35 gives a powerful description of
the inner thoughts of a drunkard. The final verse reveals the
horror of his addiction; no matter what happens to him, his first
waking thoughts are always about where he will get his next drink so he
can repeat his sin. I challenge you to read this passage for yourself and see
whether you can draw any parallels to your own thoughts about food. There Is An Answer
If you find yourself feeling guilt and shame about your sin,
now is the time to ask God for forgiveness. It is also the time
to repent and turn away from that sin, forever. Does that bring up feelings of helplessness and fear?
Maybe you've tried to conquer your cravings and excessive eating
before, but you can't seem to get from under the temptation. If you're like me, you have already tried everything to lose
weight, including the old standby "diet and exercise," but nothing
worked longer than a few weeks. In the end all that happens is
you gain the weight back, and fall even deeper into the crevass of
gluttony. It seems you'll never be able to climb out of the
darkness. But there is hope. The problem with all of those so-called "diets" is that they
never taught you to love, honor, and respect God's gifts of delicious,
nourishing food and His marvelous creation, your body. The answer is not to swear off desserts and Thanksgiving
dinner for the rest of your life. No, the answer is to understand
how your body actually works, how it handles the food you put into
it. When you understand that, you can make informed choices about
what and how you should eat to the glory of the Lord. With the help of the Holy Spirit, you can gain the knowledge
and wisdom you need to overcome this sin. But keep in mind that you won't be "doing a diet" for a few
weeks, getting "skinny," and then going back to your old way of
life. That is not overcoming sin, and it doesn't allow you to
witness to other Christian women who may need the same help you
do. That is conforming to the pattern of the world, perpetuating
your instant gratification urges, and is a recipe for disaster.
This pattern wreaks havoc on your beloved body, and may cause you to
become unhealthy. You will also most likely just get fat again
because you have not dealt with the underlying sin. Set An Example
As Christians we should set an example of excellence to the
rest of the world in every aspect of our lives, including our
bodies. Of course, our spiritual lives are of the utmost
importance, as God looks upon our hearts, but our bodies are not to be
neglected. Our bodies are the physical means which we have been given to
present ourselves to the world as a witness to God's glory. Paul
reminds us in I Corinthians 6:19-20 to glorify God in the body: "Or do you not know that your
body is a temple of Are you glorifying God in your body right now? When you see a drunkard lying on the sidewalk, do you feel
pity, shame, or even disgust? What do others think of you when
they see your body, which betrays your lust for food? You came to this page because in your heart you know you are
living in sin. If you wish to continue in rebellion, you can
leave this page and continue your life of gluttony and indulgence,
blind to your sin and the destruction it causes to both your physical
body and your Christian witness. If you have been convicted by these words, first of all thank
God for His mercy in speaking to you. If you would like to know
how you can get your eating under control, I will share what I have
learned with you. How You Can Benefit
